Responsible AI in Law and Government: Beyond Speed

Artificial Intelligence is no longer theoretical. From legal research assistants to workflow automation in government, AI is already reshaping how we work.

But speed alone doesn’t make a system better. In fact, without the right guardrails, it can make it worse. Faster doesn’t mean fairer. Automation without integrity can deepen existing problems: burnout, bias, and erosion of public trust.

If we want AI to enhance law and government, we need to put responsibility at the centre.

What Does Responsible AI Mean in Practice?

Responsible AI isn’t just about compliance. It’s about how we design, use, and oversee systems in ways that sustain — not just accelerate — our work. In legal and public sector settings, that means:

  • Understanding the tools, not just the outputs. You don’t need to be a data scientist, but you do need to know how your tools work, where they draw information from, and what their limitations are.

  • Keeping human judgement at the centre. AI can assist with drafting, research, and decision support — but accountability must remain with people.

  • Safeguarding sensitive data. Confidential client files, Cabinet materials, or court submissions can’t simply be run through unsecured platforms.

  • Avoiding “automating burnout.” Efficiency shouldn’t mean squeezing more tasks into the same hours. AI should free up capacity for higher-value, more human work.

The Risks of Getting It Wrong

When AI is misused, the risks aren’t abstract. They show up in everyday practice:

  • Over-reliance on outputs. Lawyers and policymakers who accept AI-generated material without review risk errors, inaccuracies, or even breaches of duty.

  • Bias and fairness concerns. If AI models reproduce bias, and no one checks, decisions can entrench inequality at scale.

  • Exacerbating burnout. Instead of alleviating workload pressures, AI is sometimes used to demand more, faster — worsening mental health challenges in already strained professions.

  • Training gaps. Too often, teams are handed tools without guidance on ethical use, leading to uneven and risky practices.

These risks are magnified in public sector and legal contexts, where integrity and accountability are non-negotiable.

Questions to Ask Before You Use AI

For anyone working in law or government, a few grounding questions can help ensure responsible use:

  1. Is this use case proportionate to the risk?

  2. Am I clear on the limits of the tool?

  3. Where is the data stored — and is it secure?

  4. Does this enhance fairness, trust, or humanity — or just speed?

If the answers don’t align with values of transparency, accountability, and integrity, then the use case isn’t responsible.

Building Sustainable Systems

AI isn’t going away. The challenge is to shape systems that reflect our highest standards, not our lowest shortcuts. That means:

  • Embedding transparency in how tools are used.

  • Ensuring accountability sits with people, not algorithms.

  • Protecting integrity in both data and decision-making.

Used responsibly, AI can free up time, enhance accuracy, and make law and government more responsive. Used poorly, it can erode trust and increase harm. The choice is ours.

The Way Forward

AI is here. The question isn’t whether lawyers and governments will use it — but how.

If we centre responsibility over speed, we can build tech-enabled systems that sustain us, rather than systems that accelerate burnout and undermine trust.
